On 22 September, the politically motivated trial against activist Murat Sapiyev took place

During the trial it was decided to place Murat in a pre-trial detention facility for 2 months for the period of pre-trial investigation on the basis of a politically motivated criminal case under Article 405 Part 1 of the Criminal Code (“organisation of extremist activity”).

Earlier, on 20 September, the investigator Talgat #ZHUSUPKALIYEV pressured Murat to plead guilty and sign a procedural agreement. In case of refusal, the investigator threatened to add a more serious part of Article 405, namely Part 1.
Murat refused to sign, and as a result, the threat from the investigator came into force.
Exactly one year ago, on 22 September 2020, Murat was unlawfully prosecuted under Part 2 of Article 405 (“participation in the activities of an extremist organisation”). Today, on 22 September 2021, he is already arbitrarily detained in the pre-trial detention facility under Part 1 as “organiser of an extremist organisation”.
Judge: N. #GUBASHEV
Murat SAPIYEV is a civil activist, participant in peaceful protests, subbotages (evening marches), challenges demanding freedom for political prisoners and appeals to the international community. In August 2020, he intended to go to an As (memorial ceremony) in the village Talapker in memory of the murdered activist Dulat #AGADIL. However, he was arbitrarily detained and placed in a medical centre allegedly for checking for COVID-19.
The case under Part 2 was initiated on 22 September 2020 by Nikolay #VYAZNIKOV, a senior investigator for particularly important cases of the Investigative Division of the Police Department of the West-Kazakhstan region. At the moment his case is being handled by Talgat ZHUSUPKALIYEV, an investigator of the Investigative Operative Group of the Police Department of the West-Kazakhstan region.
In the near future the Minister of Justice of Kazakhstan, Marat #BEKETAYEV, will go to Brussels to tell EU diplomats and MEPs about alleged “political reforms” in Kazakhstan.
However, even with one example, it can be shown that Kazakhstani authorities violate international human rights obligations and do not fulfil recommendations of the European Parliament resolution on the human rights situation in Kazakhstan dated 11 February 2021, in which MEPs recognised the DCK and “Koshe Partiyasy” as peaceful opposition movements and called on the Kazakhstani authorities to stop political persecution.
The political prosecution of Murat SAPIYEV will directly refute the lies Minister BEKETAYEV intends to tell to European diplomats and MPs.
