By the decision of the Expert Council on May 17, 2021, the following persons were recognized as political prisoners:
- Onerkhan Nurbol is a civic activist from the village of Birlik in the North Kazakhstan region. He was repeatedly held administratively liable for holding peaceful rallies and acts of protest. On November 2, 2020, he was convicted under Article 405 Part 2 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan by the Petropavlovsk City Court and sentenced to 2 years of restriction of liberty with probation supervision. On May 4, 2021, his restriction of liberty was commuted to deprivation of liberty for the “violation of probation”.
- Zhunusov Zhanibek is a civic activist from Nur-Sultan city, during the pre-trial investigation he remains in custody in a criminal case under Article 405, Part 2 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan (participation in the activities of the banned organization “Koshe partiyasy”). Zhunusov Zh. was persecuted repeatedly for his social activities. He was detained at protests, followed and held administratively liable. Since February 2021, he has been on preventive detention.
